What each certification means for rice buyers
Certificates only matter if you know what they guarantee. Here is what each one covers, and why it matters for your market.
- GMP
Good Manufacturing Practice
GMP covers the everyday hygiene conditions of a food business: clean facilities, pest control, equipment maintenance, staff hygiene and safe storage. In the Codex Alimentarius General Principles of Food Hygiene, these are part of Good Hygiene Practices, the foundation on which every food safety system is built.
For you: rice that is milled, stored and packed in clean, controlled conditions.
- HACCP
Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point
HACCP is the internationally recognised system for identifying food safety hazards and controlling them at critical points. For rice, typical hazards include foreign matter, stored-product pests, moisture and mould, and chemical residues. The Codex HACCP guidelines were revised in 2020, adding stronger emphasis on validation, verification and food safety culture.

- ISO
ISO certified
ISO standards set requirements for documented management systems, audited by an independent certification body. In the food sector, ISO 22000 is the main food safety management standard and builds on the Codex hygiene and HACCP principles. The exact ISO standard, scope and certification body are stated on our certificate, which we send on request.

- FDA
US FDA registered
Every foreign facility that supplies food to the United States must register with the US FDA, name a US agent and renew the registration every two years, between October and December of even-numbered years. The FDA does not approve products or issue certificates; registration allows US importers to file the required prior notice for each shipment.

EU compliant
EU food law sets strict limits for rice. Pesticide residues must stay within the maximum residue levels of Regulation (EC) 396/2005, and Regulation (EU) 2023/915 caps inorganic arsenic at 0.15 mg/kg in white rice and 0.25 mg/kg in parboiled and husked rice. We supply EU and UK buyers with rice intended to meet these limits, with laboratory reports on request.

- Non-GMO
Non-GMO rice
Thailand has not approved genetically engineered crops for commercial cultivation, and USDA reports describe a de facto ban on commercial GM crop growing in the country. Our Thai rice comes from conventionally bred varieties such as KDML 105, RD15 and RD6.

- Organic
Certified organic options
Certified organic supply is available for selected varieties, including Riceberry and brown rice. Organic exports carry extra paperwork: every organic shipment to the EU needs an electronic Certificate of Inspection issued through the EU TRACES system, and organic imports into the United States need an NOP Import Certificate issued before shipment.

- Hom Mali
Thai Hom Mali standard
Thai Hom Mali rice must meet the Ministry of Commerce standard, including at least 92% Hom Mali grains from the KDML 105 or RD15 varieties. Thailand's Department of Foreign Trade samples and tests Hom Mali for every export shipment before it leaves the country.

How to verify our certifications
We encourage buyers to check the credentials of any rice supplier, including ours. Here is how.
- Ask for certificate copiesRequest copies with your quotation and check the company name, address, scope and validity dates.
- Check the certification bodyGMP, HACCP, ISO and organic certificates name the body that issued them. Accredited bodies can confirm whether a certificate is valid.
- Confirm FDA registration through your brokerThe FDA does not publish a public list of registered facilities, but your US customs broker works with the registration details when filing prior notice.
- Use independent inspectionAppoint SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas or another surveyor to inspect and sample your shipment before loading.

Which certifications does Siam Valley Grain Export hold?
Siam Valley Grain Export is GMP and HACCP certified, ISO certified and US FDA registered. Our rice is EU compliant and non-GMO, and certified organic supply is available for selected varieties. Copies of our certificates are available on request with every quotation.
Is FDA registration the same as FDA approval?
No. The US FDA registers food facilities that supply the United States, but it does not approve or certify facilities or products, and it does not issue registration certificates. Registration allows our rice to be shipped to US importers, whose prior notice to FDA must reference the registered facility.
Is Thai rice genetically modified?
No. Thailand has not approved genetically engineered crops for commercial cultivation, and USDA reports describe a de facto ban on commercial GM crop cultivation in the country. Our Thai rice comes from conventionally bred varieties, and non-GMO documentation is available on request.
Does your rice meet EU limits for arsenic and pesticide residues?
Our rice for the EU and UK is supplied to meet EU food law, including pesticide residue limits under Regulation (EC) 396/2005 and contaminant limits under Regulation (EU) 2023/915, which sets maximum inorganic arsenic levels for rice. Laboratory test reports can be provided per shipment on request.
Can you supply certified organic rice to the EU or the United States?
Yes, for selected varieties such as Riceberry and brown rice. Every organic shipment to the EU needs an electronic Certificate of Inspection issued through the EU TRACES system, and organic imports into the United States need an NOP Import Certificate. These are issued by the organic certification body before shipment.
Can I see your certificates before I order?
Yes. Ask for certificate copies when you send your inquiry, and we will include them with our quotation so you can check the issuing body, scope and validity dates.
Which certificates come with each rice shipment?
Each shipment normally includes a phytosanitary certificate, fumigation certificate, certificate of origin and a certificate of quality and weight from an independent surveyor. Thai Hom Mali rice is also checked against the official Ministry of Commerce standard for every export shipment.
