What is Thai glutinous rice?

Glutinous rice, also called sticky rice, is a rice that becomes chewy and sticks together when cooked because its starch is almost entirely amylopectin. Thai glutinous rice is grown mainly in north and northeast Thailand, from varieties such as RD6. It is used for Thai and Lao dishes, desserts, rice cakes, snacks and glutinous rice flour.

Glutinous and sticky rice: questions and answers

Have another question? Ask our export team.

What is the difference between glutinous rice and regular rice?

Glutinous rice contains almost no amylose starch, so it becomes chewy and sticky when cooked. Regular rice contains more amylose and cooks into separate grains. Despite the name, glutinous rice contains no gluten.

Does glutinous rice contain gluten?

No. Glutinous rice is naturally gluten-free. The name refers to its glue-like, sticky texture when cooked.

Is there a minimum order quantity (MOQ) for Thai glutinous rice?

Order quantities for Thai glutinous rice are agreed directly between each buyer and our export team, based on grade, packing and delivery schedule. It can also be combined with other rice types or bag sizes in a mixed container, and regular buyers can arrange scheduled shipments.

What packaging options are available for Thai glutinous rice?

Thai glutinous rice is available in 1 kg, 5 kg, 25 kg and 50 kg. Bag types include woven PP, printed BOPP and vacuum packs, and private label packing with your own brand is available.

Which certifications does your Thai glutinous rice carry?

Siam Valley Grain Export is GMP and HACCP certified, ISO certified and US FDA registered, and our rice is EU compliant and non-GMO. Each shipment comes with phytosanitary and fumigation certificates, and certificate copies are sent with quotations on request.
